Lewes District Council BY-ELECTION

“My name is Tim Telford and I’m the Labour candidate for the District Council by-election in Ringmer, Firle, Glynde, Beddingham & South Heighton.

Let’s be up front about one thing…

I’m 22 years old. I’m young.

Too young to be a District Councillor? No.
There are 41 Councillors who comprise the District Council. If elected, I will, by some distance, be the youngest person on the Council. Why does that matter? Because, if local democracy means anything, it means having representatives from every part of the community.

Lewes District has a population of 101,400.

That includes 10,000 young people (15-24 yr olds).*

I want to get elected and give them a voice, for two reasons. Firstly, because it just seems unfair that 10% of our local population have no elected Councillor who actually comes from within their group. But secondly, because this area NEEDS its young people to stay, to live and work here, and if they can’t afford local housing and amenities, they will be forced to leave the area. And if young people leave, we all suffer as jobs go unfilled and youth energy is lost.”
